A question a non muslim or even a fellow muslim might ask you is, does Allah forget? Meaning can we attribute forgetfulness to Allah? As a muslim you will probably jump up and say of course not! But this is how you really should respond.
Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen was asked, can we attribute forgetfulness to Allah?
He replied:
Forgetfulness (Nisyaan) are of two types. The first being forgetting something that you already knew, and this type of forgetfulness never happens to Allah the Most High.
Allah says:
[Moses] answered: “Knowledge thereof rests with my Sustainer [alone, and is laid down] in His decree; my Sustainer does not err, and neither does He forget.”
As for the second type then it is (a choice) leaving off something of knowledge knowingly, and this is attributed to Allah by Himself
So taste (the punishment) because of you forgetting this meeting of yours (day of judgement) verily We have forgotten you, and taste the everlasting punishment due to your own deeds.
And Allah says about the Munaafiqeen
They forgot Allah so He forgot them, verily the Hypocrites are indeed Faasiqoon.
