Ahmad bin Hanbal and Friday Prayer

Imaam Ahmad bin Hanbal was asked a few questions regarding the friday prayer in the book Masa-il al-Imaam Ahmad bin Hanbal wa Is-haaq bin Rahaweyyah:

I asked him wether one person could give the khutbah and another person could lead the prayer

He replied: I do not know

I asked him if a person joins the Imaam in the last Raka’ah of the salah

He replied: Then he just adds one more Raka’ah, but if he joins the prayer whilst the people are in tashahud then he should pray four Raka’ahs

Is-haaq gave the same answer.

I asked him if there was any type of Imaam that the friday prayer would not be valid behind

He replied: No, the Friday prayer is not left for anything.

I asked him about the man who sneezes during the khutbah shall I say yarhamakAllah to him?

He replied: Yes do that

Is-haaq said the same thing

I asked him if I could reply to the greeting during the Khutbah

He replied: You should reply back

Is-haaq said: Yes

I asked him what if the place I am praying is very crowded and I cant preform ruku’ nor sujud?

He replied: Then you make sajdah upon the back of the person infront of you.

    informative, but i am confused. From the Sahih Bukhaari ahadith on the Friday khutbah all of them narrate that speaking or even motioning during the khutbah is disallowed unless it is toward the khateeb. Please correct me if I’m wrong. And from what i’ve read from the shiyukh on theses issues they agree that speaking or motioning is disallowed. Therefore we shouldnt reply to someone’s salaam until after the salaah and that we shouldnt reply to Alhamdulillah when a person sneezes. PLease let me know if this is wrong.

      When it comes to things like giving salam or replying to the person that sneezed etc then there is difference of opinion to it, as there are other hadiths discussing that matter, the hadiths that prohibit talk mentioned in Bukhaari etc is talk in general. Things like salam and sending peace and blessings upon the prophet is considered by some as Dhikr and thus doesnt fall underneath this hadith.

    As-Salaamu ‘Alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatuh.

    Jazak’Allahu khayr. Yes, from what I have learnt aswell you cannot reply to anyone. I will study this further inshaaAllaah.

Replying to the person who sneezes [by saying yarhamakAllah] is it Fardh 'ayn or Fardh kifaayah?

On the auhtority of Aboo Hurairah - may Allah be pleased with him - [he said] that the Messenger of Allah said:

The rights of a muslim upon his fellow muslim are five. Replying the salaam, visiting the sick, following the funeral and replying to the person who sneezes [by saying yarhamakAllah] [Reported by Bukhaaree, Kitaabal-Janaa-iz no. 1240 and Muslim, Kitaab al-Salaam no. 21626]

Explaining this hadeeth Shaykh ibn 'Uthaymeen - may Allah have mercy upon him - said:

If the person who sneezes [remembers to] praise[s] Allah then is it Fardh 'ayn [meaning obligatory upon every person] or is it Fardh kifaayah [meaning obligatory on the muslim community only as a whole] to reply to such a person [by saying may Allah have mercy upon you]? Meaning is it sufficient for one person in the muslim community to reply to a sneezing person or is it obligatory upon every single person who hears the sneezing person to reply?

[And the answer is] Some of the scholars have mentioned this to be fardh kifaayah, so if we were a group of people and one amongst us sneezed, then it would be sufficient for one person amongst us to reply to this individual.

Whilst others [from amongst the scholars] have said, rather replying to the sneezing person is fardh 'ayn upon every person that hears the sneezing person, because the Prophet said it is the right upon every person that hears him sneeze to reply by saying yarhamakAllah [may Allah have mercy upon you] so what is evident is that it is fardh 'ayn. So based upon this, [we say] that everyone that hears a person sneeze it is obligatory upon him to say yarhamakAllah and the sneezing person replies by saying yahdeekum-ul-Allahu wa yuslih baalakum [may Allah guide you and make your affairs good] and it is sufficient for him to say this to one person if he makes the intention for the whole group.

Passing away in Ramadhaan

Question: The Prophet said;
When Ramadhaan arrives the doors of Paradise are flung open and the doors of Hellfire are slammed shut.
Does this mean that one who dies in Ramadhaan enters Paradise without questioning? Answer: The situation is not as such. Rather, what this means is the doors of Paradise are flung open as an inspiration to the Muslims to make easy their entry (to Paradise). And the doors of Hellfire are shut to prevent the Believers from sins such that they do not enter (through) these doors. And this does not mean that one who dies in Ramadhaan enters Paradise without questioning, rather those who shall enter Paradise without questioning are those whom the Messenger has described in his statement;
They are the ones who do not steal and do not cauterise and are not pessimistic and in their Lord they put their trust.
