This it the story about how Ibn Hazm (a scholar from the past) started his journey for knowledge.
Imaam Aboo Muhammad ‘Abdullah ibn Muhammad reported that Ibn Hazm told him of the reason why he started seeking knowledge (fiqh).
He said:
I attended a Janazah (funeral) prayer and entered the masjid and sat down without praying two rak’aat, a man told me stand up and pray tahyi-atul masjid!
This was at the age of 26, so I stood up and prayed. Then when we returned from the Janazah I stood up (once more) to pray two rak’aat and I was told sit down!
This is not the time to pray! – it was after ‘Asr.
So I left in a sad state, and said to my teacher who had raised me, show me the house of the Faqeeh (scholar) Aboo ‘Abdillah ibn Dahoon.
So I went to him and told him of what had happened to me, so he guided me to al-Muwatta of Imaam Maalik so I started studying it with him.
[Translated from Siyaar 'alaam an-Nubalaa, The story of Ibn Hazm al-Andalusi]
Jazaak Allaahu khair.
It’s easy to give up and allow shaitaan to convince us that it’s too late to progress in gaining 3ilm, and we forget how much danger we put ourselves in by remaining ignorant. Perservering in the deen is difficult in these times, but death can approach us anytime. None of us could wish to die in a state of ignorance, we want to die upon firm taw7eed insha Allaah.
May Allaah increase us in beneficial knowledge, and keep us firm upon as siraatul mustaqeem -aameen.
I know exactly how this man feels. The determination came from sadness of not knowing, so he did something about it.
MashaAllah, he was also sincere. Allahu Musta’aan.
jazakallahu khayr.
thanks to your blog and other things in life i am considering changing careers (and seriously considering teaching English in Saudi, though the overhead for that is too much for me right now).
there’s still a slight bit of doubt, hesitation for what i should be doing. reading this gave me more strength and encouragement.
i’m also 26! and also looking for books on salah!
subhanAllah.
=)
Alhamdulillah. It is the sadness of not knowing that makes us want to know.
Yes we seek knowledge so that we may worship Allah correctly.
