When do you move your finger in Salah?

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen writes in his book ash-Sharh al-Mumti’:

The scholars have said that you point with your index finger when there is a reason to do so. But this begs the question, what classifies as a reason?

We say, its reason is when Allaah is mentioned, but the scholars differ on when this actually is. Some say this means whenever the name of Allaah is mentioned in the Tashahud (i.e. you raise your finger everytime the name of Allaah is mentioned).

Whilst others say, it is only when the kalimah laa ilaaha illallaah is said that one raises his finger.

This is the difference between the scholars, however the Sunnah teaches us that one should raise his finger only during the time of du’aa, since the wording of the hadeeth is:

He moves it (the finger) and supplicates with it.

[Imaam Ahmad, Nasaa'ee, al-Bayhaqee and Ibn Khuzaymah]

However both moving the finger as well as not moving the finger have been reported in different hadeeths. The answer to this is easy, (and it is) that the hadeeths mentioning not moving the finger, this means moving it all the time non stop. And as for the hadeeths that mention moving the finger then this refers to moving it during the time of du’aa only.

So whenever you make du’aa move your finger, and this is closer to the Sunnah.

Okay so i’m a little confused.

“So whenever you make du’aa move your finger, and this is closer to the Sunnah.”

Whenever we make dua-When exactly? During salah? :S
Aren’t we supposed to move it when we say “ashhadu al laa ilaaha illa Allah” during the tashahhud?

    Asslamu alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh!

Jazak Allahu Khair for sharing this knowledge with us.

I used to move my finger from “At-tahiyyatu Lillahi…” till the end of the dua, with interruptions. I didn’t know it was more preferred at the time of dua’3.

Sister Mehr: Dua is the part starting after Darood-e-Ibraheemi till saying Salaam. There are many authentic dua’3 to be recited at this time. (Please correct me brother if I’m wrong.)

    Fe amanillah!

    Assalamu Alaikum

Is it ok moving our finger when we say “ashhadu al lahilaha ….” ?

    Jazakallah Khair for everything

  4. Muhammedh says:

I just point the finger during “ashhadu al lahilaha” and that’s it. Do i need to move it up and down?

    • khalduu1 says:

The scholars say you should move it yes because this is how our beloved Prophet used to do.

      • Foulan says:

        Asalamalikum
Akhi when you say “scholars say….” – because these are fiqh issues – isnt the ikhtilaf accepted? I follow the hanafi methodology and the way taught is different…but with evidence

        • khalduu1 says:

          wa alaikum assalam

Ikhtilaaf is only accepted when there is room for it, like when the evidence is strong on both sides. But its not allowed (and this is something most people fail to grasp) when lets say a group of people have reached a conclusion based upon a weak hadith etc and the other group based their ruling upon an authentic hadith, then you have to follow the correct opinion and ikhtilaaf is no longer valid.

          hope that makes sense.

Hajj with Abdullaah bin Mubaarak

With the blessed month of Hajj approaching fast I am sure many of us would love to have Imaam Abdullaah bin Mubaarak as their organiser. Imaam ad-Dhahabi mentions in his famous book Siyar-'Allaam an-Nubalaa:

Whenever the time for Hajj used to approach Abdullaah bin Mubaarak used to gather the people of his village and they used to say to him 'We will accompany you [for hajj]' He used to reply 'bring your wealth' then he used to take their wealth and place it in a safe and lock it.

Then he would take them from their village to Baghdaad, and throughout the journey he would to spend upon them from his own wealth, giving them the best type of food and best type of sweets. Then he would take them from Baghdaad whilst they would be in their most beautiful appearance [in terms of clothes etc] and most complete grandure.

Until they would reach the city of the Prophet, he would ask them what have your families asked you to buy for them? So they replied such and such.  Then he would take them to Makkah, after having completed their hajj he would say to them what have your families asked you to buy for them from the goods of Makkah? So they replied such and such. And he would buy it for them, then they would leave Makkah. Throughout the journey he would spend upon them from his own wealth until they reached their home village again.

Upon returning home he [Abdullaah bin Mubaarak] would help re-build their houses and after three days [after arrival] he would organise a big feast for them and give them new clothes and when they had finished eating and felt joyful he would call for the safe to be brought out and opened then he would return the weatlh of each and everyone.

Passing away in Ramadhaan

Question: The Prophet said;
When Ramadhaan arrives the doors of Paradise are flung open and the doors of Hellfire are slammed shut.
Does this mean that one who dies in Ramadhaan enters Paradise without questioning? Answer: The situation is not as such. Rather, what this means is the doors of Paradise are flung open as an inspiration to the Muslims to make easy their entry (to Paradise). And the doors of Hellfire are shut to prevent the Believers from sins such that they do not enter (through) these doors. And this does not mean that one who dies in Ramadhaan enters Paradise without questioning, rather those who shall enter Paradise without questioning are those whom the Messenger has described in his statement;
They are the ones who do not steal and do not cauterise and are not pessimistic and in their Lord they put their trust.
