Hajj with Abdullaah bin Mubaarak

With the blessed month of Hajj approaching fast I am sure many of us would love to have Imaam Abdullaah bin Mubaarak as their organiser.

Imaam ad-Dhahabi mentions in his famous book Siyar-’Allaam an-Nubalaa:

Whenever the time for Hajj used to approach Abdullaah bin Mubaarak used to gather the people of his village and they used to say to him ‘We will accompany you [for hajj]‘ He used to reply ‘bring your wealth’ then he used to take their wealth and place it in a safe and lock it.

Then he would take them from their village to Baghdaad, and throughout the journey he would to spend upon them from his own wealth, giving them the best type of food and best type of sweets. Then he would take them from Baghdaad whilst they would be in their most beautiful appearance [in terms of clothes etc] and most complete grandure.

Until they would reach the city of the Prophet, he would ask them what have your families asked you to buy for them? So they replied such and such.  Then he would take them to Makkah, after having completed their hajj he would say to them what have your families asked you to buy for them from the goods of Makkah? So they replied such and such. And he would buy it for them, then they would leave Makkah. Throughout the journey he would spend upon them from his own wealth until they reached their home village again.

Upon returning home he [Abdullaah bin Mubaarak] would help re-build their houses and after three days [after arrival] he would organise a big feast for them and give them new clothes and when they had finished eating and felt joyful he would call for the safe to be brought out and opened then he would return the weatlh of each and everyone.

Is it permissible to send Salat upon other then the Prophet?

Those who, when a misfortune befalls them, say: Surely we are Allah's and to Him we shall surely return. Those are they on whom are Salat and mercy from their Lord, and those are the followers of the right course. [Suurah Baqrah Aayah 156-157] Shaykh ibn Uthaymeen said  - may Allah have mercy upon him - explaining this verse:

In this verse there is a daleel [evidence]  that the 'Salat' from Allah 'azza wa jall is not mercy rather it is more specific and more complete and better, and whoever explained it from amongst the 'ulamaa [scholars] that the Salat from Allah is mercy, and from the Angels it is du'aa [invocation] and from the mankind it is istighfaar [asking for forgivness] then this is not true rather Salat is different from mercy because  Allah mentioned Salat together with Rahmah [mercy]  and this joining shows a difference in meaning. And there is consensus amongst all the scholars that it is permissible for you to say to any fellow muslim 'o Allah have mercy upon so and so'

But the 'ulamaa differ regarding sending 'Salat' upon a person, is it allowed or prohibited?

There are three stands amongst the 'ulamaa concerning this:

  1. Amongst them are those who make it permissble, without any conditions being attached to it.
  2. And others make it impermissible regardless of the circumstance
  3. The last group make it permissible if it is an add on [meaning the Prophet first and adding people on after him]

And the correct opinion is the last one, as is evident through the statment

'o Allah send Your  Salat upon the Prophet Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad'

Or if it is not an add on but it is due to a valid reason as Allah says:

Take alms out of their property, you would cleanse them and purify them thereby, and send your Salat upon them; surely your Salat is a relief to them; and Allah is all Hearing, all Knowing. [Suraah Tawbah Aayah 103]

So if it has a valid reason then there is no problem in that. Then there is no problem for you to say

'o Allah send Your Salat upon so and so'

If a man came to you and said to you

'Here, take my Zakaah and distribute it amongst the poor people'

Then it is allowed for you to say

'May Allah send His Salat upon you'

Just like Allah commanded you to.

Passing away in Ramadhaan

Question: The Prophet said;
When Ramadhaan arrives the doors of Paradise are flung open and the doors of Hellfire are slammed shut.
Does this mean that one who dies in Ramadhaan enters Paradise without questioning? Answer: The situation is not as such. Rather, what this means is the doors of Paradise are flung open as an inspiration to the Muslims to make easy their entry (to Paradise). And the doors of Hellfire are shut to prevent the Believers from sins such that they do not enter (through) these doors. And this does not mean that one who dies in Ramadhaan enters Paradise without questioning, rather those who shall enter Paradise without questioning are those whom the Messenger has described in his statement;
They are the ones who do not steal and do not cauterise and are not pessimistic and in their Lord they put their trust.
