Since it is the dream of every muslim to live in Madeenah I thought I’d write a little about how life in Madeenah actually is.
Anyone who might have come to Saudi Arabia for ‘Umrah or Hajj will certainly tell you that Madeenah is very much different to Makkah. In Madeenah your heart finds peace and tranquility unlike Makkah where the life is a bit more hectic. So what is it really like living in the city of the Prophet?
Well for starters your Emaan increases without a doubt, just imagine walking on the same piece of land that Aboo Bakr, Umar or even the Messenger of Allah himself walked on! Even learning hadith will prove to be different. For an example you might be sitting in the classroom and the teacher explains to you the hadith concerning the Mountain of Uhud and points to the window and says thats Uhud right there.
Or you might be walking backwards and forwards in the masjid trying to memorize Saheeh Bukhaaree and you stop and realise that Imaam Bukhaaree was sitting right here where you are standing right now collecting hadith. Then you start to shiver and think this hadith I am memorizing took place right here! Inamal A’maalu biniyaat! The Messenger of Allah was sitting right here when he said it, Jibril walked into this place, thats usually when it gets too much and you have to take a break and drink some zam zam water.
At the end of a long tiresome week you might want to go for an Umrah, its only 50 riyals away. You perform your ‘Umrah at ease and because it is officially no Umrah season [meaning people from abroad can't come here] the Masjid in Makkah is so empty that you finally get to kiss the black stone without loosing your two front teeth.
Perhaps you have a personal issue that you need a ruling for, well Madeenah is the city of Scholars you will find them everywhere, how often is that you walk into a book store and see a real Muhaddith? Well in Madeenah that happens. And if you arent pleased with that then their houses are always open for coffee and dates [ajwa] you only have to drop in. You can even catch Shaykh Huthayfi walking alone without guards or anything.
The people of Madeenah are the most welcoming people you might ever meet, the great grandchildren of the Ansaar. They have it in their blood to welcome people and mind you they are amongst best of hosts, after all they were the ones that welcomed our beloved Prophet. They will share with you whatever they might have and if you tell them you are a student of knowledge they get so happy and proclaim welcome o guest of the Prophet!
Do you want to relax yet not leave Madeenah? Well then we even have our own Haram, the Prophets Masjid. When you step inside the masjid your mind relaxes and you feel a wave of happiness deep down in your heart bubbling out of you that no words can describe, but you remind yourself of how many fellow muslims there are that would do anything to be in your shoes and you feel immense gratitude towards Allah.
The Prophet loved Makkah and spent more than two-thirds of his entire life their, yet in the end he chose Madeenah as his final abode and if you ever get the chance to live here you will soon realise what made him pick Madeenah.
Subhanallah! What a description! May Allah allow us to die in Madeenah and be buried in Baqi. Ameen!

BarakAllaahu feek. It’s been over a decade since I’ve been to Madeenah. I wish I could say that all of Saudia is like what you described. Things are quite the opposite on the other side.
Wa feeka baarakAllah, Allah preserves the city of His beloved Prophet, Madeenah is indeed not like other cities. May Allah preserve it and keep it pure.
