Mixed emotions.

Today is a happy day as well as a sad day (in some ways). It is happy in the sense that tomorrow I will be returning to the city of our beloved Prophet after having been on a summer holiday, however this means I will have to leave my family and dear mother not to mention the few friends I have, behind.

I am sad and excited at the same time, I can’t wait to be back in Madeenah! But saying goodbye is never easy. I do realise how fortune I am, and that many people would (perhaps) cut their little toes off just to be in my shoes (I dont have big feet, it’s just a figure of speech lol) but alhamdulilah no doubt, as soon as you emerge yourself in the knowledge again, you tend to forget your family (in a good way) and you might only get home sick once or twice the entire year.

A brother asked me the other day, what do you miss the most about Madeenah? I didn’t really have to think much before I said, the company of the pious and knowledgeable, because it has a very big effect on you. Whether it be in the Prophet’s Masjid or the University itself, you always have people who love Islaam and are more knowledgeable than yourself and just being in their company brightens up your day a lot.

So if the da’wah slows down somewhat, then please keep in mind I am back studying and might get busy from time to time. I am sure brothers and sisters will understand.

I leave you with some wise words the famous Companion Salmaan al-Faarisi once said:

It is not the Land that makes a person pious, rather it is his deeds that do so.

Praying two raka'ahs upon entering the masjid, is it waajib (obligatory) or sunnah? (optional)

After speaking about rulings concerning the masjid, Shaykh ibn 'Uthaymeen - may Allah have mercy upon him - said:

And from it - i.e the rulings concerning masjids - is that if a person enters a masjid then he does not sit down until he prays two raka'ahs. He does not sit down until he prays two raka'ahs regardless of what time he enters [the masjid] whether in the morning, afternoon, night, day, sunrise or sunset whatever the time might be, because the Prophet said:

If anyone amongst you enters the masjid, then he should not sit down until he prays two raka'ahs. [Reported by Bukhaaree, Kitaab al-Tahajud no. 1163 and Muslim, Kitaab Salaat-ul-Musaafireen no. 70 and Ahmad in his Musnad 311/5]

So much so, that the Prophet was delivering a sermon to the people on a friday and a man came and sat down, so the Prophet stopped his sermon and adressed the man saying:

Have you prayed?

The man replied:

No.

The Prophet said:

Stand up and pray two raka'ahs and hasten them [Reported by Ahmad in al-Musnad 302/3, Tabaraanee in al-Kabeer 193/7 and Ibn Khuzaymah in his Saheeh 1453]

[So the Prophet orderded him to hasten in the prayer] in order for him to listen to the sermon [attentively]

Based on this hadeeth some of the 'ulamaa [scholars] have said that the two raka'ahs prayed upon entering the masjid is in fact waajib (obligatory) because the Prophet orded this man to pray the two raka'ahs even though he'd be busy from listening to the sermon, and listening to the sermon is waajib in itself, and you would not be occupied from a waajib unless the thing your occupied with is a higher degree of waajib.

So because of this some scholars have reached the conclusion that if a person enters a masjid and he is in the state of wudhu and sits down and does not pray then he is sinning.

Reading Surah Faatiha twice?

Question: What is the ruling for the person who repeats the recitation of Surah Faatiha? Meaning when he finishes it once, he recites it once again? Answer: It is not allowed to knowingly repeat Surah Faatiha, since this has not be reported from the Prophet.  And he said;

Whoever introduces anything new into our affair (i.e. Islaam) that which is not from it, then it will be rejected. [Bukhaaree]

However the Salaah is still correct, and such a person should be given sincere advice (to stop it) so that he does not repeat this practise. [Fataawa al-Lajnah ad-Daa-imah 276/8]
