What to study?

Whenever I get the chance I buy books with every penny I get. And there is nothing I enjoy more then to skim read new books I have bought. The other day I bought a really nice book called “Aqeedah ahl as-Sunnah wal-Jamaa’ah” the author being Shaykh Muhammad bin Ibraheem al-Hamad. The book deals with alot of things but what I like the most is the fact that the late mufti Shaykh Bin Baz reviewed the book and added bits to it. Here is an extract touching on a topic that concerns many youngsters today.

[The correct aqeedah] does not go against sound knowledge rather it reinforces it and calls towards it. So the benefitting knowledge, which both the Qur’aan and the Sunnah call towards is the type of knowledge that will bring its bearer [true] benefit and there is no difference wether this type of knowledge is connected with the dunya or the aakhirah rather whatever purifies the actions and softens the manners and guides to the straight path then it is from beneficial knowledge.

And the Sharee’ah, in all its perfection has ordered for the study of all types of beneficial knowledge. From the study of Tawheed, Fiqh Arabic language even Economics, Politics, Warfare and knowledge pertaining to Industry (and medicine [Shaykh Bin Baaz added this himself]) and any other type of beneficial knowledge that will benefit the individual aswell as the community as a whole.

So there is no type of beneficial knowledge that the Sharee’ah has not orded the study of, regardless if it’s pertaining to the religion or the dunya, in truth whatever beneficial knowledge from the dunya has been linked to the aakhirah [i.e a person with the right intention will be rewarded for it]

And alot of people have gone to both extremes concerning this, some people from the ahl al-ghuluw [people who make the religion difficult upon themselves] have said only study the religion and others like secularists have said only study the dunya and thus both have gone astray.

    MashAllaah tabarakallaah.

  2. Aboo Yoosuf says:

MashaAllaah this is a great reminder. We often find many Muslims making things hard on themselves and asking too many questions (which Allaah dislikes!).

Plus if we are to leave off from medicine, engineering, etc. then our dependancy on the non-Muslims would only increase. And then some of us would keep complaining why we don’t have a Muslim dentist, why we don’t have Muslim Companies to work for, why no female Gyno, why this and why that. Even this internet we are using is from the invention and development of the non-Muslims!

So inshaAllaah the words of Imaam Ibn Baaz puts some sense into many of our brothers and sisters. We had a lecture given by the American Da’ee Abuz Zubayr Shadeed Muhammad very recently and he also emphasized on studying as related to dunyaa and nurturing social welfare within the Salafees. He even said, “We Salafees do not like to see progress!” to express the sad attitude of many of us.

As the Prophet, peace and blessings be on him, said, “Make things easy and do not make things difficult, give glad tidings and do not repel the people [from you].” (Saheehayn)

He killed 300 with one arrow.

Alhamdulilah in Islaam we are in no need of Hollywood or its special effects. Our heroes are the companions of the Prophet and their stories are true. 'Uthmaan bin Abee 'Aatikah said:

The enemy threw petrol (bombs) against the people (the Muslims) so Mu'aawiyyah said 'If they are doing this, then retaliate in the same way' So both parties started hurling petrol (bombs) at each other.

At sea, one Roman soldier prepared to throw a pot full of petrol against the ship of Aboo al-Ghaadiyyah, but Aboo al-Ghaadiyyah sent an arrow flying and killed the man on the spot causing him to fall with the pot of petrol consequently setting his own ship ablaze. Thus the fire devoured the entire ship and all its crew, they were 300 in number.

After that incident people used to say, the arrow of Aboo al-Ghaadiyyah killed 300 men.
