Beat that!

This is something for all the students of the Qur’aan to ponder and think about.

How long does it take you?

Imaam Nawawi writes in his book at-Tibyaan fee aadaab hamalatil Qur’aan:

It is befitting to make special time for the tilawah of the Qur’aan and increase in it.

It was from the practise of the salaf - may Allah be pleased with them – that they used to finish the Qur’aan within different periods of time.

Ibn Abee Dawuud reports that some of the salaf used to finish one khatam (complete Qur’aan) in two months.

Others use to finish one khatam every month.

Some used to finish one khatam within ten days the likes of Hasan al-Basri. And some every eighth day such as the noble companion Ubayy bin Ka’b.

A great portion of them used to finish the Qur’aan within a week, people such as ‘Abdullah bin Mas’uud and ‘Alqamah bin Qays etc.

Some finished every six days such as al-Asuud bin Yazeed and others every five days.

A portion of them used to finish the Qur’aan every  four days such as Aboo Dardaa’.

And even a greater portion used to finish the Qur’aan every three days like ‘Abdullah bin ’Amr.

Some every two nights such as ‘Ataa bin as-Saa-ib. And a big portion of them used to finish the Qur’aan every day like ‘Abdullah bin Zubayr.

Some even finished the Qur’aan twice, meaning every night and day! Such as ‘Abdur-Rahmaan bin al-Qaasim.

Some finished the Qur’aan three times a day, whereas others finished the Qur’aan eight times a day, four khatams during the day and four during the night.

As for those who used to finish the Qur’aan every day and night were the likes of ‘Uthmaan bin ’Affaan, at-Tameem ad-Daariyy, Sa’eed bin Jubair, Mujaahid, ash-Shaafi’ee amongst others.

Ibn Abee Dawuud reports with an authentic chain that Mujaahid used to finish the Qur’aan once during Ramadan between magrib and isha.

Some of the Taabi’een used to finish two khatams between magrib and isha during the month of Ramadan.

And it has also been reported that many of the salaf used to finish the entire Qur’aan in one raka’ah these were people like ‘Uthmaan bin ‘Affaan, at-Tameem ad-Daareyy  and Sa’eed bin Jubair.

Masha’Allah. For them, the Qur’an was as easy as reading a 500 page chapter book. Something a person whose been reading all their lives can quickly do in one night. I’d replace such ability with the need to complete the Qur’aan. Subhana’Allah, they read it not like a chapter book, but like that of a personal dear diary. It meant more to them, it was a treasure that they delved into going to another world entirely.

…May Allah grant us all the oppertunity to be like them and learn the Qur’aan in that manner.

    Ameen ya Rabbil Alameen.

I read smwhr in a hadeeth tht d one who has read quran in less than tree days hasnt understood it.dnt rmmbr d reference though.so whts ur opinion on it.

    • khaldun says:

Yes that is true, however certain scholars such as Haafidh Ibn Rajab stated that this prohibition does not include the blessed times such as Ramadan etc. Or the blessed places such as a person being in Makkah or Madeenah etc.

Also some scholars like Shaykh al-Albaanee said that there is a possibilty that some of the salaf where unaware of this particular hadith at that time.

    JAzakallahu khair for the info.

  4. Aboo Yoosuf says:

Mujaahid rahimahullaah finished reciting the entire Quraan in betweeen Maghrib and ‘Eesha? Allaahu Akbar. It’s just incomprehensible. I don’t think I can even finish Surah al-Baqarah in full within that time!

Hajj and Istighfaar

Shaykh Abdu-Razzaq bin Abdul-Muhsin al-'Abbaad writes concerning the hajj in his book Min Madrasatu-l-Hajj

It is often that Allah commands for istighfaar, especially at the end of acts of obedience and upon completion of worship.

Allah the Most High says:

ثُمَّ أَفِيضُواْ مِنْ حَيْثُ أَفَاضَ النَّاسُ وَاسْتَغْفِرُواْ اللّهَ إِنَّ اللّهَ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ

and surge onward together with the multitude of all the other people who surge onward, and ask God to forgive you your sins: for, verily, God is much-forgiving, a dispenser of grace.

And the surge mentioned in the verse here is in reference to the return towards Mina where the Hujjaj stay during the days of hajj. And Allah ordered them to do istighfaar so that it patches up any mistakes or short comings that might have occured.

Similarly it was from the practise of the Prophet to end his good deeds with istighfaar. It is authentically narrated in Saheeh Muslim  that the Prophet used to say upon finishing salah, astaghfirullah three times. Even at the end of the night prayers he used to end it with istighfaar.

Allah the Most High said:

وَالْمُسْتَغْفِرِينَ بِالأَسْحَارِ

and [those who] pray for forgiveness in the early morning.

And he used to conclude his sittings with istighfaar as has been authentically reported by Aboo Dawuud on the authority of Abee Burzah al-Aslamee that whenever the Prophet wanted to end a sitting he used to say:

SubhaanakAllahuma wa Bihamdika ash-Hadu an laa ilaaha illa ant astaghfiruka wa atuubu ilayk

The Prophet even ended his life with Istighfaar as has been narrated by Imaam Bukhaaree in his saheeh on the authority of 'Aishah. During his last days in this world whilst being in the care of his beloved wife 'Aishah she heared him repeating.

Allahuma ighfirlee warhamnee wa alhiqnee bi rafeeqil 'ala

O Allah forgive me and have mercy upon me and make me join the company of the noble ones!

Reading Surah Faatiha twice?

Question: What is the ruling for the person who repeats the recitation of Surah Faatiha? Meaning when he finishes it once, he recites it once again? Answer: It is not allowed to knowingly repeat Surah Faatiha, since this has not be reported from the Prophet.  And he said;

Whoever introduces anything new into our affair (i.e. Islaam) that which is not from it, then it will be rejected. [Bukhaaree]

However the Salaah is still correct, and such a person should be given sincere advice (to stop it) so that he does not repeat this practise. [Fataawa al-Lajnah ad-Daa-imah 276/8]
