Dangers of lying

Imaam Tabari writes in his famous Tafseer about the incident of Yusuf being thrown into jail.

This illustrates the dangers of lying and that it actually ended up being the death of one of the young men.

And two young men happened to go to prison at the same time as Joseph.

One of them said: “Verily, I saw myself [in a dream] pressing wine.” And the other said: “Verily, I saw myself [in a dream] carrying bread on my head, and birds were eating thereof.”

[And both entreated Joseph:] “Let us know the interpretation of this! Verily, we see that thou art one of those who know well [how to interpret dreams].

It was mentioned that when Yusuf entered the prison the inmates asked him what he does, whereupon he replied I interpret dreams. So the two young men said to each other come and lets test (his abilities)

as-Suddi said:

When Yusuf entered the prison he said I interpret dreams, so the two young men said to each other come lets test this slave who interprets dreams (if he is truthful or not) we will make up a dream.

So they asked Yusuf without having seen anything (i.e they forged a dream).

      wa alaikum assalam

      yes if a person tells you, disbelieve in Allah or talk bad about the Prophet otherwise we will kill you, and they actually can kill you then you are allowed to say what they want you to say as long as you have firm belief and Imaan in your heart

  2. Muslimah says:

    sub7anAllah. Ok, what about if you deny it? If you say I believe in Allah and you talk good about the Prophet (salAllaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam?) If they kill you, are you are martyr or should you try to protect yourself first? Sorry for the questions.

    Jazak’Allahu khayr.

      No doubt in certain circumstances standing up for the truth is the better thing to do, just like how Imaam Ahmad did when he was put on trial. And it can even become waajib, if you know that no one else will stand up for the truth but yourself. But to utter the words of disbelief is only a means of saving your own life, and for most people its the safest option, and was even approved by the Prophet when Yaasir the famous companion was forced to curse the Prophet, the Prophet told him if they force you again then curse me again.

Dreams and Rulings

In Islaam dreams can only give glad tidings or sometimes serve as warnings to people. Dreams do not bring new rulings in Islaam. Certain sects actually take rulings based upon dreams they might see, and this is no doubt a big source for the spread of Bida' (innovations) Imaam ash-Shaatiby writes in his book al-Itisaam about this:

And from the most baseless forms [of bid'ah] is that a group of people actually use dreams to derive rulings. So they might say we saw so and so [mentioning a pious man] and he ordered us to do such and such and stay away from such and such.

And some of them might even say we saw the Prophet in our sleep and he told me such and such and commanded me to do that.

So this person actually does this based on the dream and turns away from the clear Sharee'ah and its limits and this is wrong.

Since dreams seen by any other than Prophets are not taken as a ruling except that we put the dream against what is in our hands [i.e the Qur'aan and Sunnah] if it is in accordance with it then we accept it otherwise we have to leave it and turn away from it.

Passing away in Ramadhaan

Question: The Prophet said;
When Ramadhaan arrives the doors of Paradise are flung open and the doors of Hellfire are slammed shut.
Does this mean that one who dies in Ramadhaan enters Paradise without questioning? Answer: The situation is not as such. Rather, what this means is the doors of Paradise are flung open as an inspiration to the Muslims to make easy their entry (to Paradise). And the doors of Hellfire are shut to prevent the Believers from sins such that they do not enter (through) these doors. And this does not mean that one who dies in Ramadhaan enters Paradise without questioning, rather those who shall enter Paradise without questioning are those whom the Messenger has described in his statement;
They are the ones who do not steal and do not cauterise and are not pessimistic and in their Lord they put their trust.
