Debating an innovator

The Shaikh of Aboo Daawood and an-Nisaaee once debated an innovator who said the Qur’aan is created (i.e. the speech of Allaah is created) this is what took place.

The Shaikh: Did the Prophet and his successors know of this bid’a?

The innovator: No they did not know of this.

The Shaikh: So if they did not know of this, how is it possible that you came to know of it?

The innovator: (retracts his statement) No, they knew about it.

The Shaikh: If they indeed did know of it, do you truly think they would not have mentioned it (in a hadeeth etc) or call mankind towards this (knowledge) or was that not a possibilty?

The innovator: No they kept quite about it and did not mention it.

The Shaikh: So you are saying that something the Messenger of Allaah and his companions kept silent about and did not mention, you mention instead?!

And thus the innovator was dumb struck and the Khaleefah at that time was so impressed that he supported the Sunnah and ordered those who spoke about matters our Prophet did not speak about (i.e. spreading lies about him) to be taken far away from his presence.

Who built the Ka'bah?

The Ka'bah is not just a square building, but has a very interesting and long history to it. Who actually built the Ka'bah anyway? Well the scholars differ amongst each other, yes Allah mentions Ibraheem and his son raising the foundations of the Holy building but that means that there was something there to raise in the first place? Imaam Tabari writes in his famous tafseer:

The scholars of Tafseer are in dispute about the foundation Ibraheem and Isma'eel built, did they actually build it from scratch? Or did they only raise a foundation that already was there?

A group (of scholars) said the foundation was actually built by Prophet Aadam following the command of Allah. And Ibraheem only rebuilt it.

And Imaam Qurtubi writes:

And the scholars differed amongst themselves who built the Ka'bah first? A group of them said the Angels, after Allah rebuked them at the creation of Prophet Aadam.

Reading Surah Faatiha twice?

Question: What is the ruling for the person who repeats the recitation of Surah Faatiha? Meaning when he finishes it once, he recites it once again? Answer: It is not allowed to knowingly repeat Surah Faatiha, since this has not be reported from the Prophet.  And he said;

Whoever introduces anything new into our affair (i.e. Islaam) that which is not from it, then it will be rejected. [Bukhaaree]

However the Salaah is still correct, and such a person should be given sincere advice (to stop it) so that he does not repeat this practise. [Fataawa al-Lajnah ad-Daa-imah 276/8]
