Lessons from the Encounter Between the Prophet Moosaa and al-Khadir

In Soorah al-Kahf, from verse 60 through verse 82, a story is told of an encounter between the Prophet Moosaa and al-Khadir, as well as the events which transpired in the time they spent together.

The scholar ‘Abdur-Rahmaan ibn Naasir as-Sa‘dee explained these verses in his Tafseer and he supplemented his explanation by listing 38 lessons derived from that encounter.

This splendid and remarkable story contains many lessons, rulings and principles. We will draw attention to some of them with the assistance of Allaah.

1) The excellence of knowledge and journeying to seek it, as it is the most important of affairs. Moosaa certainly traveled a long distance and experienced fatigue during his quest. He chose to not stay among Banee Israa’eel in order to teach and guide them and, instead, he preferred traveling for the sake of increasing his knowledge.

2) Prioritizing matters according to their importance. Learning and improving one’s knowledge are undoubtedly more important than refraining from doing so and being preoccupied with teaching while not yet being adequately equipped with knowledge.

However, the more complete approach is to combine both affairs (i.e. learning and teaching).

3) The permissibility of employing an attendant, whether in residence or traveling, so as to take care of provisions and to seek ease, as done by Moosaa.

4) In the case of someone who travels for the purpose of seeking knowledge, or striving in the cause of Allaah, or something similar; if publicizing the objective and location would prove advantageous, then it should be done.

Such would surely be better than withholding it, since publicizing would have benefits including carrying out all necessary preparations, approaching the matter with insight, and letting others know the nobility this venerable act of worship, as Moosaa said, “I will not give up until I reach the junction of the two seas or until I spend
years and years travelling.”

Furthermore, in preparation for the battle of Tabook, the Prophet openly informed his Companions of the objective and location, although it was his custom to conceal such information. That was done taking the resulting advantage into consideration.

5) Ascribing evil and its causes to Shaytaan, as it relates to his enticement and deceptive beautification, although it is all according to the Divine Decree of Allaah. This is understood from the attendant of Moosaa saying, “And none but Shaytaan made me forget to mention it.”

To be continued…

To the blog owner, it’s amazing how a person appears to all as being so humble. Yet only himself, Allah (and a few individuals) know what he’s up to behind closed doors…

    you know what i mean….

    FEAR ALLAH!

      Assalamu Alaikum Warahamtullahi Wabaraktuh

No actually I do not know what you mean, I do not even know you. Perhaps you got the wrong person? Either way, no one amongst us is free from sin, certainly not myself, may Allah reward you for the reminder and grant all of us the ability to fear Him in the open aswell as behind closed doors.

The Great Grand grand son of the Prophet said in his famous Qaseedah laysal ghareeb:

      ???? ???????? ????? ???? ?????? ??????????
      ????? ??????????? ?? ?????? ????????????
How merciful has Allah been to me by giving me respite
And I have increased in sins but Allah has always shielded me

      ??????? ???????? ????????? ???? ??????
      ??? ?????? ??????????? ??? ???????
The hours of my days pass by without regret
No crying, no fear, no sadness

      ?????? ??????? ???????? ?????????? ???????????
      ???? ???????? ???????? ????? ???????????
I am the one who closes the doors with fatigue
on disobedience, & The Eye of Allah watches over me..

Imaam Ahmad bin Hanbal and al-Tirmidhee narrated and Ibn Hibaan reported in in his saheeh the hadeeth of Aboo Hurairah wherein which the Messenger of Allah said:

…and if you were not to sin Allah would replace you with a new creation so that they would sin and then Allah would forgive them…

True Love?

In today's world, a lot of young people are afflicted by a serious illness that is even more deadly than any virus or bacteria. It is an illness that affects the heart and will cause its death, if not treated.

This illness is none other than love before marriage, and it is with great sadness that a lot of youth fail to realize that in reality there is no such thing as "true" love before marriage, yes, there might be crushes, infatuations and the likes, but true love? No.

Some people might argue and say, how can you make such a bold statement? To that I reply, love is what creates happiness not sorrow, love is what gives you a peace of mind not worry and anguish but most importantly, love is that which brings you closer to Allaah the Most High, not that which will push you further away from Him and acquire His wrath.

Yet there are a few brothers and sisters, who truly love Allaah, only to find their hearts crippled by this disease, they have apparently fallen in "love" with the opposite gender (before  marriage) and can't seem to stop thinking about them, they lose their appetite, their sleep and become neglectful of life as a whole.

These individuals sometimes regret falling in love and want a way out, they want a cure for this illness, but is there really a cure?

Listen to what Imaam Ibn al-Qayyim has to say:

"And the cure for this deadly illness (i.e. love before marriage) is for the person that is afflicted to realize that this love is only due to his/her own delusions and ignorance.

So upon such a person is to first and foremost strengthen their Tawheed and reliance upon Allaah, and secondly to increase in worship and busy themselves with it, so much so that they do not have any spare time letting their minds wander and think about their beloved.

And they should call upon Allaah to protect them and save them from this evil, just as Prophet Yusuf called upon Allaah and he was saved. And they should do as he did, be as he was, in terms of ikhlaas (sincerity) and remembering Allaah in abundance.

This is because if the heart is filled with ikhlaas for the sake of Allaah, there will be no space left for any unlawful love to be present, rather this only happens to a heart that is empty and has no ikhlaas whatsoever.

And let such people remind themselves that whatever Allaah has decreed for them is only in their own best interests, and when Allaah commands something it is never to cause harm or misery to His slaves.

And let them also remind themselves that their unlawful love does not benefit them, neither in this world or the hereafter! As for this world then they will be so preoccupied with their love that it will cripple them and will cause them to live in a fantasy world. And as for the hereafter then it will cause them to be preoccupied with the love of the creation instead of love for the Creator!

These people need to be reminded, that the one who is emerged in something will never see its ill effects, neither will the person who has never experienced such things. The only people who will be able to relate to them are those who have experienced the same thing but have been saved. Such people can look back and realize how evil it is."

Passing away in Ramadhaan

Question: The Prophet said;
When Ramadhaan arrives the doors of Paradise are flung open and the doors of Hellfire are slammed shut.
Does this mean that one who dies in Ramadhaan enters Paradise without questioning? Answer: The situation is not as such. Rather, what this means is the doors of Paradise are flung open as an inspiration to the Muslims to make easy their entry (to Paradise). And the doors of Hellfire are shut to prevent the Believers from sins such that they do not enter (through) these doors. And this does not mean that one who dies in Ramadhaan enters Paradise without questioning, rather those who shall enter Paradise without questioning are those whom the Messenger has described in his statement;
They are the ones who do not steal and do not cauterise and are not pessimistic and in their Lord they put their trust.
