The Qur'aan

Ok so people ask me how did you go about memorizing the entire Qur’aan brother Aboo Thaabit? From cover to cover? Was it not difficult? How can I do something like that?

Well to be honest it is very easy and I’ll let you guys in on a secret.

Memorising the Qur’aan is extremly easy, infact even a parrot could do it! And it is this concept you have to come to terms with.

It really has to do with the mind-set of a person, meaning if you think something is hard you will naturally find it hard but if you think something is easy, it will become easy. So when you start, have the right mind-set and Ikhlaas.

Allah tells you in the Quran itself:

وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا الْقُرْآنَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ

Hence, indeed, We made this Qur’an easy to remember, then is there anyone to remember it?

Do you then doubt Allah?

Secondly is the issue of discipline, I can not stress this enough, if you want to be a hafidh you have to make time to memorize.

Basically you will have to be a loner, lock yourself in your room listen to a recording over and over again.

When I used to memorize I had a tape player and I used to rewind the tape over and over again trying my best to get the pronunciation and flow of the verse correct, sometimes late into the night and I could hear the rest of the family snoaring.

Also try to immerse yourself in the Qur’aan, make your breathing, eating and even your spare time into Quran.

Recite it whilst walking or perhaps sitting in class waiting for the teacher to arrive.

In your sunnah prayers stop reciting surah Kawthar and Ikhlaas, try a new surah master it!

One of the things that inspired me to start memorizing was when I saw the Imaams of Makkah, namely Sudais and Shuraim, leading the Taraweeh prayers.

When I saw them stand there leading so many people with that confidence reciting the verses of Allah off by heart I thought to myself WOW! If they can do it so can I!

And whatever spare time I got not memorizing in my room I used to sit in front of the tv and listen to their recitations.

I used to quiz my friends about the Quran, test them and then letting them test me.

When you love something it truly becomes a pleasure.

Remember to stop thinking about when you will be finished. I remember the day I finished my Qur’aan I was sad, people said to me this should be the happiest day in your life! I said I am sad because now I don’t have any new Qur’aan to memorize.

So do not be hasty dear brothers and sisters rather take your time, do not see memorizing the Quran as a task or burden rather enjoy the journey and process.

I realise there are a lot of things left unmentioned but I figured there are many articles like this one all over the internet and my intention was only to inspire fellow muslims to do the same thing as me and not to boast.

My younger brother threaded the same path as me and will finish the Quran shortly too inshAllah.

اللَّهُمّ اجْعَلْنَا لِلْمُتَّقِينَ إِمَامًا

mashaAllah akh this is very inspiring. mind if I share it and some other entries you got, crediting your name? also, what do you do when you forget in the middle of a Verse in your prayer? it’s so embarrassing knowing you’re speaking to your Lord and then you don’t know what to say next coz you forgot the next word or set of words in the Surah. Do you do then restart it and end it before that verse comes in or you go to rukoo’ halfway through the verse?

May Allah reward you brother Aboo Yoosuf.

What you do in that case is you go back a few verses and try to remember the best you can, usually its stress that makes you forget, just pause collect your mind re read it slowly try this twice or three times. If you still cant remember do not be disheartned since even the Prophet forgot himself, just stop at the verse before it go into ruku, and remember that mistake and try your best to avoid it in future.

      Hope that helped inshAllah.

Alhamdulillah my Mother in law and brother in law are both haafidheen and they did it in 3 years mashaaAllah with perfect Tajweed. SubhaanAllah they said the headaches were so much SubhaanAllah but Allah gives the tawfeeq to whom He wills. Alhamdulillah i know that the Quraan has truly increased them in taqwaa and in the thirst for practicing it and Alhamdulillah since my BIL was 14 he was leading salaatu taraweeh in a the same masjid for 4 years now. Alhamdulillah i wish i could be like them. InshaaAllah.
InshaaAllah akhii if you do have time you can check out my MIL website (swahili) http://www.alhidaaya.com InshaaAllah.

    Salaam Alaykum Akhi Khalduun,

First of all, I have to say, that May Allah reward you all this. I came across your site while Googling “ways to memorize the Quraan”. Ever since, I am ADDICTED to your website. I have read A lot of your posts and my favorite was “The lady who spoke to Quraan to Abdullaah bin Mubaarak”.

I ask Allah to reward you for your work Janna Fardowsa (the highest place in Jannah).

Akhi, I have the EXACT same motivation as you did. Recently, Allah has placed in my heart eagerness to learn his words by heart.

I am assuming that jealousy is Harram, except in competing for the good. I have attended Taraweeh consistently this past RAMADAN and I became more eager to learn the Quraan like those other Qaaris leading the Salaah.

Is it wrong to say, I want to be like them (be a memorizer and lead the prayers someday too- not to show off but to get Allah pleasure and hope to gain his mercy)?

How many ayah/pages do you recommend one to memorize?
    What times do you recommend?
What Sheikhs do you recommend to listen to that are easy to follow their recitation and gain good understanding of the tajweed?
How long does it take? how do you keep what you memorize when you memorize large poprtions?
Overall what do you say to a young brother who DEARLY wants to learn the words of Allah by heart?

    Jazzakum Allah Akhi!
    Br. As-Soomaal.

    P.S
Akhi I guess you got my email, if you can send me an email, I have further desire to communicate with you personally. Thanks.

Btw, like you, watching the imams of the haram lead taraweeh has played a huge part in my hifdh alhamdulillah bi idhnillah
May Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’aala engrave every single ayah of the Quran in our hearts n give us the taufeeq to act on His every command. Ameen

    Salaamu Alaykum

How much Quran do you think would be sufficent to read on a daily basis if someone knew 6 or 7 Juz?

Respecting people of innovation

Sometimes you might wonder why certain people are so harsh towards innovators. Yes, of course innovation is a bad thing in Islaam, but isn't it just a mistake like any other mistake? Why be so stern towards them?

The great scholar Imaam ash-Shaatibee explains this beautifully in his book al-'Itisaam:

And if a person gives respect to an innovator then this creates two major problems that will in reality aid in the destruction of Islaam.

FIRST: If you respect people of innovation then the general masses will be deceived by this and will presume (due to the importance you are giving this innovator) that he is the best of all mankind, and that which he is upon (i.e. his innovation) is good and thus people will follow his innovation and leave off the Sunnah.

SECOND: If you respect the people of innovation then this will serve as a motivation for them and encouragement and this in turn will cause them to increase in more innovations and thus innovations will come to life and the Sunnah will die, since these two things cannot coexist.
