Even better!
I was thinking to myself the other day, can there be anyone more generous then 'Abdullaah bin Mubaarak? The Prophet verily spoke the truth when he said "Leave my companions alone! For verily if any of you were to give in charity the mountain of Uhud in gold you would not come close to one handful of their charity". One name popped into my mind. 'Abdur-Rahmaan bin 'Awf. Who is this great companion? The Prophet bore witness that he would enter Jannah, and he was amongst those who participated in the battle of Badr regarding whom [i.e those who fought at Badr] the Prophet said:
Do [whatever deed] you please
[Reported by Imaam Ahmad and Bukhaaree]
Not to mention that he was amongst those companions who took the pledge of Ridwaan underneath the tree, and the Prophet himself prayed behind him in salah. But what made 'Abdur-Rahmaan surpass others was a particluar gift that Allah had given him, a gift that distinguished him from the rest of the companions. Imaam ad-Dhahabi mentions regarding him:And when he made the Hijrah to Madeenah he was poor with no wealth, so the Messenger of Allah made him a brother to Sa'd bin ar-Rabee'i who offered to split his wealth in half [and share it with him] and divorce for him the most beautiful of his two wives, but he ['Abdur-Rahmaan] replied: May Allah bless you and your family and your wealth but [rather] guide me to the market.
So he went and started buying and selling and made alot of profit. And he married a woman [paying for her mahr] with a block of gold. And the Prophet said to him, after seeing the traces of marriage, declare a walimah even if its with one sheep [i.e by slaughtering it]. Then his affair [i.e of being a busnissman] reached the level it reached.
[Siyar 'Allaam an-Nubalaa, volume one, page 91, the seerah of 'Abdur-Rahmaan bin 'Awf]
It was when he gave 4000 dinars for the sake of Allah that the hypocrites said, verily 'Abdur-Rahmaan is showing off greatly.
Abdullaah bin Mubaaarak said 'Abdur-Rahmaan gave charity during the Prophets life time, spending 4000 dinars and then 40,000 dinars plus 500 horses for Jihaad and 500 more animals [camels etc]
The Prophet said the best amongst you are those who are the best towards my wives, 'Abdur-Rahmaan bin 'Awf then gave a garden worth four hundered thousand dinars as a gift to them.
az-Zuhri reports that 'Abdur-Rahmaan bin 'Awf sold a piece of land he had from 'Uthmaan for forty thousand dinars then he distrubted the wealth between the poor from the tribe of Zuhrah and amongst the Muhaajireen and the mothers of the believers.
When 'Aishah recieved her share she asked from whom is this? It was replied from 'Abdur-Rahmaan bin 'Awf. She then said verily I heared the Messenger of Allah say none will take care of you after me but as-Saabiruun, may Allah quench the thirst of 'Abdur-Rahmaan with water from Salsabeel [a river in Jannah]
He also gave a further fifty thousand dinars for the sake of Allah and one thousand horses, then he looked for the survivors from amongst the people of Badr and found 100 people and he gave each one of them four hundred dinars.
When he passed away the gold he had left was so much it had to be cut up using scythes and the one eigth that his wives were intitled to as inheritance after his death equaled to three hundred thousand and ontop of that he wrote a will giving each wife one hundred thousand dinars.
He freed thirty thousand slaves from slavery, and always helped the poor and needy. Yet despite all of this ad-Dhamrah bin Rabee'ah said:
You could never distinguish 'Abdur-Rahmaan from amongst his slaves.
All this was due to the du'aa of the Prophet when he said:
May Allah bless you ['Abdur-Rahmaan bin 'Awf] in that which you spent [for the sake of Allah] and may Allah bless you in that which you kept [for yourself]
