‘We are a people that had a great privilege, the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم  prayed towards us through Anazatah’

He said:

‘This shows that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم  prayed towards Anazatah (the tribe)’

And he mistakenly thought it was a name of a tribe when in reality it was just another name for a stick! (ie the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم prayed towards the direction of a particular tribe, not named ‘Anazatah, but rather used ‘Anazatah which means a stick or a staff as a sutrah)

What is even stranger than that is what al-Haakim reported from a Bedouin saying that Anazatah means ‘sheep’ and this was due to him placing a sukoon on the nuun instead of reading it ‘Anazatah he read it ‘Anzatah which means sheep thus making double the mistake!

Similarly, some scholars heard of the ahaadeeth mentioning the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم prohibiting Tahleeq on the day of Jumu’ah before the Salah and said:

‘I have not shaved my head before the Salah on a Friday for 40 years!’

But the truth of the matter is that the hadeeth is referring to Tahleeq as in making circles (sitting in circles) and not shaving of the head.

Ibn as-Salaah said:

‘And these type of mistakes have been reported from the major scholars, but they are excused because it was never explained to them properly’

Imaam ad-Daarqutnee reports in his book ‘at-Tasheef’ that ‘Uthmaan bin Abee Shaybah (from amongst the greatest scholars in Islaam) read to his congregation Tafseer and said:

‘جعل السفينة في رحل اخيه’

It was said to him, it is

‘جعل السقاية في رحل أخيه’

Whereupon he replied

‘Me and my brother Aboo Bakr do not read the recitation of Aasim! (but in reality it wasn’t an issue of different qiraa”ah)’

And he later read the Tafseer of Soorah al-Feel and said

‘أَلَمْ تَرَ كَيْفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِأَصْحَابِ الْفِيلِ’

Starting the Soorah with Alif Laam Meem, as in Baqrah!”

As many of you know, a few months ago there was a big crisis and famine in East Africa (Somalia in particular). This was due to a number of reasons, one of the main ones being the lack of rain in the area for a considerable length of time.

What was shocking was the media coverage of the entire incident and the delayed response of the international community. The fact is that Somalia had a lack of rain for three consective years and adding the fragile condition of the country that had been in turmoil for more than 20 years only increased the disaster.

But the media made it seem like it was a problem that suddenly happened, that appeared from no where and in the eyes of the international community this great human tradegy was only a problem that lasted for two or three months and once the media stopped covering it the world seemed to think that the crisis solved itself but the reality was that Somalia once again, only drifted back into the forgotten corner of the worlds subconsciousness.

This is not to say that a lot of good people did not donate and contribute towards helping, alhamdulilaah a lot of people did – may Allaah reward them for that immensely, both in this dunya and the hereafter – and the situation in Somalia is slowly but surely improving, with reports of rain etc.

So why am I writing all this then? The truth of the matter is that I was approached by some very good practising brothers – may Allaah reward them – and we sat down and discussed this whole issue. It is good that we as muslim donate and help our fellow brothers and sisters in times of need, however this type of problem can rear its ugly head very soon once again, especially in a place like Somalia where drought and famine is not very uncommon.

Hence the brothers informed me of this project raised by some, called Project One Drop, which basically is an effort to dig wells in order to supply a constant stream of water even in times of great need. And it is for this reason that donations are needed in order to dig these wells and supply our fellow muslim brothers and sisters in Somalia with this very essential part of life, something that me and you take for granted so easily.

At the moment the target we are trying to achieve is three thousand pounds and this will help towards the building of the well, this is not a scam or one of those false charities, rather it is a true and sincere effort by a few brothers to do the right thing and I ask you all to help contribute towards this noble cause, with whatever you can spare. Remember, in the sight of Allaah nothing is too little, and help spread the word since the one who guides towards goodness is like the doer (hadith of the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wassallam).

The Messenger of Allaah – sallallaahu ‘alayhi wassallam – also said:

“Whoever digs a well, no living creature drinks from that well whether it be a Jinn, a human or even a bird, except that Allaah will reward them on the day of Judgment (for digging that well).”

1. a) In this book the Shaikh mentions 10 things that nullify a persons islaam, we mentioned two reasons during our class why he only restricted himself to these 10, what are these two reasons?

b) Give an example of knowledge that is obligatory upon all muslims to know individually, and then give an example of knowledge that is only obligatory upon the muslim community as a whole to know.

This is a very beautiful Qaseedah in the arabic language by al-Imaam Haafidh al-Hakami. InshaaAllaah it will serve as a reminder for us so that we may improve our Salah. If Allaah bestows upon us the tawfeeq and ability then inshaaAllaah we shall try our best to upload a translated version in the english language, until then I hope we can try and pick up a few words here and there.

1. Aboo Hurayrah: ”It is more beloved for me to sit a little while, learning my religion, than for me to pray the entire night up until dawn” [Jaami'ul Bayaan al-'ilm wa fadhlihi volume 1. page 60]

2. al-Hasan al-Basree: ”The scholar is better than the one who is Zaahid (very religious) and worships a lot” [Jaami'ul Bayaan al-'ilm wa fadhlihi volume 1. page 61]

3.‘Umar bin al-Khattaab: ”That one thousand worshippers who fast during the day and pray during the night, all die, is easier to bare than the death of one single scholar who understands the halaal from the haraam.” [Jaami'ul Bayaan al-'ilm wa fadhlihi volume 1. page 65]

4. Sufyaan ath-Thawree: ”There is no deed better than seeking knowledge – if the intentions are pure” [Jaami'ul Bayaan al-'ilm wa fadhlihi volume 1. page 63]

This illness is none other than love before marriage, and it is with great sadness that a lot of youth fail to realize that in reality there is no such thing as “true” love before marriage, yes, there might be crushes, infatuations and the likes, but true love? No.

Some people might argue and say, how can you make such a bold statement? To that I reply, love is what creates happiness not sorrow, love is what gives you a peace of mind not worry and anguish but most importantly, love is that which brings you closer to Allaah the Most High, not that which will push you further away from Him and acquire His wrath.

Yet there are a few brothers and sisters, who truly love Allaah, only to find their hearts crippled by this disease, they have apparently fallen in “love” with the opposite gender (before  marriage) and can’t seem to stop thinking about them, they lose their appetite, their sleep and become neglectful of life as a whole.

These individuals sometimes regret falling in love and want a way out, they want a cure for this illness, but is there really a cure?

Listen to what Imaam Ibn al-Qayyim has to say:

“And the cure for this deadly illness (i.e. love before marriage) is for the person that is afflicted to realize that this love is only due to his/her own delusions and ignorance.

So upon such a person is to first and foremost strengthen their Tawheed and reliance upon Allaah, and secondly to increase in worship and busy themselves with it, so much so that they do not have any spare time letting their minds wander and think about their beloved.

And they should call upon Allaah to protect them and save them from this evil, just as Prophet Yusuf called upon Allaah and he was saved. And they should do as he did, be as he was, in terms of ikhlaas (sincerity) and remembering Allaah in abundance.

This is because if the heart is filled with ikhlaas for the sake of Allaah, there will be no space left for any unlawful love to be present, rather this only happens to a heart that is empty and has no ikhlaas whatsoever.

And let such people remind themselves that whatever Allaah has decreed for them is only in their own best interests, and when Allaah commands something it is never to cause harm or misery to His slaves.

And let them also remind themselves that their unlawful love does not benefit them, neither in this world or the hereafter! As for this world then they will be so preoccupied with their love that it will cripple them and will cause them to live in a fantasy world. And as for the hereafter then it will cause them to be preoccupied with the love of the creation instead of love for the Creator!

These people need to be reminded, that the one who is emerged in something will never see its ill effects, neither will the person who has never experienced such things. The only people who will be able to relate to them are those who have experienced the same thing but have been saved. Such people can look back and realize how evil it is.”

[ad-Daa' wa ad-Dawaa p. 300]

The Messenger of Allaah said:

There is no Muslim that passes away during the day or night of a Friday except that Allaah saves him from the fitnah of the grave.

Now there has been quite a lot of talk about this hadeeth, some scholars declare it saheeh others question the authenticity of it, so I decided to translate for you the conclusion of our noble Shaikh, al-Albaanee.

He said in his book Ahkaam al-Janaa-iz

This Hadeeth has been reported both by Imaam Ahmad and al-Fasawee in his al-Ma’rifah, narrated through two paths by ‘Abdillaah bin ‘Amr and it has backing up evidence from hadeeths narrated by Jaabir bin ‘Abdillaah and Anas bin Maalik including others.

So keeping in mind all these other variations of this hadeeth it concludes this hadeeth as either hasan or saheeh. (even though the hadeeth itself might be weak)

Shaikh al-Mubaarakfoori goes into depth regards this in his book Tuhfat al-Ahwadi which is an explanation of Sunan at-Tirmidhee. In it, he expands on the position of Shaikh al-Albaanee and brings a lot of evidence for this opinion.

And as for the meaning of the hadeeth:

 ”except that Allaah saves him from the fitnah of the grave”

The Shaikh says:

This could mean both being saved from the punishment of the grave as well as the questioning of the grave
